So it’s been over a week since I last updated the site – been meaning to get around to it for a while, but I’ve just been busy with, well…
Still, somewhere in the midst of all the Easy Mac, Peter Serafinowicz and just plain ol’ lying-around-and-doing-nothing, there have been a few notable events that have taken place since you last heard read from me. With that having been said, here we go:
Last Tuesday I headed down to LA to hang out with Dan and Dave Buck for a few days before they went back to their hometown to celebrate the holidays. On my way there I accidentally got onto a train that arrived 10 minutes before the one I was actually supposed to get on, so I ended up completely lost in Anaheim Canyon for a couple of hours. If not for my phone’s built-in GPS maps system I probably would have ended up in some shady neighborhood inhabited by savages, and we all know how that sort of thing turns out. Eventually I was able to get onto a bus to Fullerton, where I caught the last train going to LA Union that night.
I finally reached the Bucks’ house around 8, right in the midst of them filming a couple of items for their new DVD andthensome, which if you don’t already know (shame on you!) is a follow-up to their 3-DVD set The Trilogy.
Also present during filming was English magician Myles Nakouzi, whom I’d already known through our online correspondence since the days of Cheater’s Cheater. It was great to finally meet him in person, and needless to say, his accent provided an endless source of amusement for the rest of us. (Myles, if you’re reading this, thanks for all the little stories and anecdotes – still can’t get the one about Blaine out of my head. RIIIIIIIGHT?????)
While I had spent a lot of time with the Bucks before, this marked the first time I got to witness them at work, and it was really inspiring to see how efficient and experienced they were at it. The atmosphere on set was very laid-back and fun, and from the material I’ve been shown so far the DVD looks like it’s going to be nothing short of awesome.
Being the ultra-nice guys that they always are, the Bucks allowed me to cover some behind-the-scenes footage during the shoot, so here are a bunch of assorted screen grabs for your viewing pleasure:

Filming Myles at the Farmer’s Market on a rainy Wednesday

On set at the Bucks’ apartment

Myles demonstrating a card-from-beard technique

Dan the Man, still hard at work
All in all it was a great experience, and just like everyone else I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the DVD. Till then, I’ll be keeping myself busy working on a special new project that’ll be hitting the scene in a couple of weeks… more on that in future updates ;)
andthensome is currently in post-production, and can be expected to be released sometime in the spring of ’09.
Check back on Dan and Dave’s website for future updates on its status and other Buck-related shenanigans.

Nice pictures!
It's great to see that stuff continues to be done :) They're certainly firing on all cylinders at the moment!
Stein it's an electric fire I think, at least, it might be gas, it's not real though :)
Thanks for all those pics Kevin !!!!!!!!!!
The Indiana Jones in South Park reference was EPIC.

You and I fused together would probably make the worlds biggest South Park fan.

Haha… true that. You've even got the initials to boot!

Awesome. Seems like you had a great load of fun, andthensome more fun. Also, really like the pictures and the way they are framed. Love the setting and lights and stuff of the whole film setting. Would love to do some flourishes in front of that camera. Although I'm shit scared of cameras in general. Haha.
But do the Bucks always use Tripod while filming studio stuff? Because in a lot of those On Demand videos it seems like the camera is held way high…
Also, the fireplace where Dave is warming up the HVX… Is it real? Or is it electric? Can't really tell nowadays.
Take care,
Stein
@Stein:
Well, you get used to video cameras after you've been around them long enough… it's those *security* cameras you gotta be worried about ;)
The Bucks mainly use tripods for filming stuff that they want to have a more professional, static-like feel to it – for example, in everythingelse a lot of Dave's section on finger exercises was filmed with a tripod.
On the other hand, for something like their On-Demand section, they usually film hand-held, so that it gives more freedom to the artist to improvise, and more leeway for the cameraman to shoot from a variety of angles, providing the most optimum learning experience for the customer.
Lastly, the fireplace in their apartment is artificial. However, just like any good illusion, it does look pretty darn convincing.

Heh, some times i end up watching myself do flourishes in the security cameras. So the guys at the back room have something entertaining to watch.
Thanks for the information on the camera stuff, and that fireplace. Damn it looks awesome. Too bad it doesn't illusionate that the room is getting heated.

WOW. Kev. ALwayas like to read your blog. Man, I waited anthensome so long. ANd it'll be realesed only spring'09? :) Ohhh. Ok, anyway nice photos. Waiting vid…
Does dave teach a new variation on Erdnase Go Round? or does he explain it with words or something?
Both. Dave will be covering a couple of advanced handlings and variations of Erdnase Go Round for the DVD, in fully spoken detail.

awesome stuff, just wondering would it be appropriate for a complete newbie of card flourishing to buy Dan and Dave’s CDs?
Definitely! Even if you’re a beginner, I think there’s still a lot you could learn from, say, The Trilogy, especially the little exercises and basic run-throughs on the third disc.
Even if you don’t end up using any of their material, it’s still a real treat to watch and be inspired by, as anyone who owns their material can tell you :)
