Yesterday afternoon, it was brought to my attention by my friend Spencer Peterson that the venerable Jack Carpenter (not to be confused with Halloween director John Carpenter) had mentioned on The Magic Cafe that he was a fan of my material.
Upon being asked what the one effect he would choose to perform at a job audition would be, he replied:
“It would have to be a quickie, I assume. Truth is, I work quick and I could get three quickies in there, I know it, but let’s say just one.
Right now, I’m infatuated with a wonderful quickie by that genius Kevin Ho, a visual buttkicker called “Repaint[ed]“. I have some work on it presentationally, that gives an entertaining reason for one little discrepancy in the routine.
If you don’t have his book, “Smooth Operations,” get it! I don’t feel at liberty though to discuss anything in it, including this trick.
So your answer is “Repaint[ed]“, with the Carpenter Twist. . .I just love it.

Coming from the man who invented the freakin’ Impulse Change himself, I’d have to say it’s a pretty high honor to hear that he’s not only a fan of my work, but also has work on my fan. An interesting twist of fate too, given that the Inverse Impulse Change in Smooth Operations was inspired stylistically by Carpenter’s original.
I know what you’re probably thinking right now:

And yeah, that’s pretty much all this is. But hey – if you got accolade from the J.C. as well, you’d probably be bragging about it too.

Awwwwww yeah.

RePainted can be learned from my 2008 book on card magic, Smooth Operations.
If you haven’t gotten it already, please do. Otherwise Jack Carpenter will find you and make you physically experience an impulse change.
Congrats man, pretty big honor =)
wait to have an ego of 0 you need a post length of negitive 4?
Exactly. Every now and then I go back and delete a couple of posts just to maintain humility.

Hahahaha, great one, Kev!
Congrats on the mention from Jack Carpenter! I'm sure he's very proud =) Props to you for (obviously) inventing a crazy ass visual and magical flourish!
Now back to practicing blank fans…
