Oh, it’s ON

December 26th, 2008 § 18

oh no you didn't!

Not unlike a member of the Church of Latter-day Saints, ever since I read what I now consider to be one the greatest books of all time, I’ve been eagerly trying to push it on to everyone I know. So far I’ve gotten almost all my good friends and even my sister to read it, and their reactions have been pretty much unanimous: it’s a stunning piece of work.

So with the film coming out in little over than three months away, I’ve been rushing to get more people to read it before they watch the movie, so that way they’ll be able to get the full experience of having their minds raped by graphic novel brilliance for the first time.

Alas, as fate would have it, there’s been one person as of late who’s has proven to be a bit of a hard sell. This Negative Nancy comes in the form of Allan Hagen, a fellow magician and flourisher from Norway who is also a very skilled and knowledgeable cinematographer to boot. Long story short, I’ve been egging him on to read the book for ages, but even after months and months of my constant annoyance he still hasn’t even gotten down to getting himself a copy of the book. Apparently him being a film nut meant he wasn’t much of a reader – but then again, graphic novels are just like storyboards, aren’t they?

So earlier today, I was talking to him via IM when I saw an oppurtunity arise for me to push the book on him once again. Rather than describe the whole process to you, I think I’ll let an excerpt from our conversation speak for itself (potty language filtered out for all my 2-year old visitors):

To make a long story even shorter, the both of us struck a deal where we would each patronize the other party’s respective source of enlightenment (completely out of spite, it seems). To specify,

If Allan Hagen reads all of Alan Moore’s graphic novel Watchmen before the 6th of March, 2009 (when the movie comes out), I will watch all 4 current seasons of the television show LOST before the 21st of January, 2009 (the day season 5 begins airing).

There, I said it. I realize it’s a lot of work (over 83 40-minute long episodes vs. 400-odd pages of illustrations with text) just to convince someone to read a book that will completely change their lives, but then again, I was going to have to get around to watching LOST sometime anyhow – with all the conflicting opinions I hear of it I’ll have to decide for myself how good of a show it really is.

Taking Allan’s word that he’ll be getting his hands on a copy of the book tomorrow, I’ve decided to get a head-start on episode 1 of the first season tonight. I’ll be updating my progress on this ‘LOSTmen Challenge‘ via my Twitter account, so now is as good of a time as any to start following me if you haven’t already.

So there you have it, Allan. It’s ON. I’ll finally get down to watching this series everyone is talking about, and in return I expect you to hold up your end of the deal accordingly.

Otherwise… well, I’ll let the poster speak for itself.
