Where “Visual Madness” Came From

November 7th, 2008 § 1

Now, I’m certainly not the only person to have such a strong association to this phrase; however, after having it as my Gmail address for 4 years and now my website domain name, I think it’s safe to say that we’ve long since crossed the line from ‘playful fascination’ into ‘unhealthy obsession’ territory.

Things weren’t always like this. Back when Cheater’s Cheater was still up, I used to go by the overly-long and often-misspelt username MnemonicaRedux. Everything was all fine and dandy, and at the time I was content enough with watching countless videos of everyone doing the same thing… you know what I mean. Then I came across this video:

Holy crap on a stick. Along with Fire in the Hole, this was one of the first videos I’d ever seen of Huron Low and man was I blown away by it (interestingly enough, I’d actually met him before in real life, but that’s a story for some other time). Immediately, I forwarded the video to my friend Justin Ye to check out. A while later, I was talking to him and the subject of Huron came up. I asked Justin if he’d seen the video, to which he replied:

“Yeah, man – it was VISUAL MADNESS!”

So there you have it. Big credit goes to my buddy Justin for coming up with the term, and to my fellow Virtuoso member and friend Huron Low for creating the effect that inspired it.

If you loved the effect and would like to amaze others with it, you’ll be glad to know that Huron teaches it in “Four”, his groundbreaking DVD on unique Torn and Restored plots & methods. Buy it here.
