The Big (Head) Bang Theory

November 11th, 2008 § 4

While on the way to dinner today, I saw a guy playing around with a yo-yo. Granted, he wasn’t one of those crazy mad skills yo-yo artists, but the reason I mention it anyway is because it reminded me of that i-Yo Yo-Yo charger I saw on the internet a while ago. Sure, it’s a really cool way to charge your portable mp3 player without electrical outlets, solar/wind power or batteries, but how often are you going to be using a yo-yo while you listen to music? With that in mind, I racked my brain trying to think of a more practical solution. This is what I came up with:

In essence, the idea is that the headphones use the energy from your head-banging motion to charge your mp3 player. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Awesome music comes on. You start to shake your head in time with the tune
  2. The head movements cause the pendulum inside the right headphone to shake around, hitting the charge panels on either side of it
  3. This generates electricity, which charges up your mp3 player.
  4. If your battery is already full, the remaining energy will be transferred to a Lithium-ion cell battery in the left headphone, where it can be stored for later use

Of course, this idea is not without its flaws: for one, Justice listeners are gonna get a hell lot more battery life than their Chopin counterparts. There’s also the pressing issue of whether the time you save having to charge your mp3 player is really worth all the hospital bills you’re going to get. Then again, maybe Nietzsche was right after all.

Footnote: Can’t believe I forgot to mention these guys. The three of them alone would kick the LHC‘s ass ANYTIME.
