History:
My first semester of Filmmaking class during my junior year of high school went by so well that the following year, I decided to take the Advanced Filmmaking course that was offered by the same teacher.
Our first assignment (asides from reading some essays about Bergman and Welles) was to make a 1-minute short film that established a sense of setting. Without using any dialogue at all, we were to construct a piece that, visually, created for the viewer an idea of location, tone, and atmosphere.
While most of the other students in the class got fancy with airports, food courts and supermarkets, I decided to head in the opposite direction and focus on something a lot smaller in scale. The day before it was due, I had my good friend Justin Ye come over and help me with some of the filming. After dinner, it took about two hours to edit in Vegas, and I was able to turn it in the very next day.
I ended up getting an A for it. AWESOME!!!!!
Fun Fact: At about 00.06 you can see my sock-covered foot in the upper-left hand corner of the screen. Need to learn to stand further away during stop-motion animation… either that or use the Crop function properly :P
I remember seeing this one long ago on your kev-h-films youtube channel.
I really like it – It has that certain mixture of coolness and nonesense in it. And the ending is great =D
Wow this one's so old! You should post up some stuff with your new camera.
I know… I'll definitely be putting up some new stuff in the near future. But first, I gotta get all this old stuff out of the way so everything's archived in chronological order!
dude, i'm just a random surfing your site (big fan of your magic by the way). but more importantly, wanted to know what you shoot on and what you program/s you use to edit.
Hey Matt,
Thanks! I used a standard definition Sony Handycam from about 2003 to 2007 (Void Deck was the last card video I shot with it), and after that I got a JVC GZ-MG575 which I used to shoot videos like Sick and Twisted Wings of the Mockingbird and Portable Playground with. Then in last August I got a hold of the Canon HV30, which has been my favorite camera by far. You can see it used in the Starburst video.
As for editing, I started out using Windows Movie Maker (Visual Madness and Re-turn of the Kings), then moved on to Sony Vegas when I worked on HFFH. I continued using Vegas for many years until I completely switched over to Mac last summer, after which I've been using Apple's Final Cut Pro ever since.
Hope that answers your questions! Feel free to shoot me an email if you have anything else you'd like to ask about cameras and such ;)
