Music: “Chemical Burn (Extended)” (Non-extended version on iTunes)
History:
For our second assignment in Advanced Filmmaking, our teacher told us that we were free to do whatever we wanted. So of course, the first thing that came to my mind was ‘Subliminal Propaganda Film!”, the results of which you see above. The entire video is made up of stock footage I found online, plus a few photographs and movie excerpts here and there.
My goal in making Pieces of Strange was to provoke a more emotional response through the use of subliminal imagery as opposed to a narrative format. Like any pretentious avant-garde student film, it means whatever you want it to mean ;)
Fun fact: the title is taken from the tagline for Paul Harris’ Art of Astonishment series: “Pieces of Strange to Unleash the Moment”.
I've always thought that it's an awesome short film. Amazingly edited. But somehow I've allways found it quite spooky.
It's got a nice Surrealism-film-movement feel to it. Things moving backwards, rapid jumps from one subject to another, clean cuts, etc.
Very nice though. I just got Final Cut Express (now I just need to learn to use it.)
Interesting :)
Just curious, what grade did you get for this one? :D
Got another A for this piece as well, plus a nice lengthy explanation from my teacher detailing why he liked it :D
it reminds me of burger king for some reason.
i would really like too know where you got that explosion footage from. i hope you didnt get it yourself?
The explosion in the video was sampled from the end of Dr. Strangelove by Stanley Kubrick. Probably my 4th favorite Kubrick film.

i jus tripped out completly
is that the soul is not in the body??? spelled backwards??? or is it the body is not in the soul????
It’s actually a quote from Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles – something along the lines of “the soul is not in the body is in the soul”. Check out the series sometimes, it’ll give you a real head-trip ;)
