TV on the Radio

Dear Science album coverIt’s hard to categorize what these guys sound like since they oscillate between high-octane and chillax faster than you can say ‘bring an Ambulance, I’m Staring at a Wolf Like Me.’

Nevertheless, I’ve recently been getting back into Dear Science, their latest album that they put out in September of last year. While Return to Cookie Mountain and Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes had a few tracks here and there that I really liked, I feel that this one’s by far the most consistent – granted, I’m a sucker for hand claps and strings anyway.

I’ll Be There When Billie Jean Thrills Me by Beating It Like a Smooth Criminal in the Mirror

September 4th, 2009 § 0

When I first saw this I thought it was just 7 very similar-looking guys standing on stage doing a cappella together – wasn’t until I realized the credits were showing a disturbing total of 2 people involved that I JIMP’d.

And yes, I realize that you’ve been bombarded with these songs left, right up and center ever since the end of June, but trust me – this one is definitely worth your timezes.

The first time my friend Adam Kerchman introduced me to E-603, I didn’t really understand what I was hearing – I assumed it was just a bunch of weird rap songs, and filed his stuff away into the ‘listen later’ folder, where it stayed for the next 5 months or so. It wasn’t until I came across Jockin’ On Ya during a random shuffle (redundant much?) one day that I truly understood what it was that Adam had unleashed on me – a myriad of meticulous mash-up madness of magnanimous magnitude, made manifest by a master of musical mini-mixing (and much more). » Read the rest of this entry «

Atlas Sound – Walkabout

July 27th, 2009 § 2

I can’t say I’ve really been a big fan of Atlas Sound’s music… I deleted all but 3 songs from Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel and How I Escaped the Prison of Fractals, and pretty much booted everything else of his from my iTunes after trying it out.

Still, thanks to musical tastemaster Taylor Johnston‘s recommendation of AS’s new track ‘Walkabouton Twitter, I decided to give the dude another try… » Read the rest of this entry «

Off the Record

July 23rd, 2009 § 0

So I was just doing my usual business in iTunes and adding missing cover art to new albums, when a particular section in the Wikipedia entry for The Flashbulb‘s album Soundtrack to a Vacant Life caught my eye.

Basically, it’s a message from the artist that was attached to several torrents of the album that were floating around on trackers out on the internet. Far from being a bitter tirade meant to guilt-trip music piraters, it’s actually an amazingly sincere and insightful perspective from the artist on the truth behind record labels and how musicians get paid for their music. » Read the rest of this entry «
