Don Hertzfeldt - I Am So Proud of You

“i am often asked why i don’t do commercials or ad campaigns or music videos and why i’ve turned down small fortunes from the corporate universe in favor of just carrying on with my own things.

i like to take walks. i like hiking in the woods around here and climbing the foothills and exploring the coast. it clears my head. i find new things. it’s something i’ll probably always enjoy doing.

so somebody comes along and says hey, i hear you like to take walks. how about i pay you to walk? you just have to walk around my house in circles for eight hours a day wearing a sandwich board that has a picture of my product on it.

no, i’d rather just walk through the woods and explore my own places out there, thanks. but what difference does it make? as long as you’re walking, why not make a lot of money from it at the same time? because money’s not the reason i take walks. it doesn’t really factor into it.

i take walks because i enjoy it. it’s something i’d do if i was rich and it’s something i’d do if i were poor. i guess maybe someone might pay me to walk around in the woods. but i’m gonna keep doing it anyway.

The New Theory11 Logo

February 23rd, 2009 § 17

I don’t usually make posts on this site about the current online magic/flourish scene (unless it has to do with awesome new releases, of course), but the recent hype over the revelation of Anonymous (a.k.a. Daniel Garcia) as the new artist at Theory11 has prompted me to come out and express my honest feelings on the subject.

To clarify, the addition of Garcia to the team isn’t what sparked this post; if you think about it, it’s actually makes a lot of sense. What this post is about, then, is this:

theory 11?

The site’s About page pretty much states it clearly: Theory11 is a group of eleven individuals. After all, that is where the name comes from, doesn’t it? Think about it – the Fantastic Four is called the Fantastic Four because there are four people in it. That’s why Spider-Man didn’t join the team – “Fantastic Five” just didn’t have that nice ring to it. True, She-Hulk did end up becoming a member, but that was only because The Thing had quit prior to that – the equilibrium of Four would have been disturbed otherwise. » Read the rest of this entry «

Jack Brungardt – The Moth

January 22nd, 2009 § 3

Jack is crazy. Jack is awesome. And with his latest short comes something crazy awesome – a poignant piece about a man’s journey to become one with nature that manages to be weird, pensive, intense, disgusting and hilarious all at once.

Alright, I’m all out of adverbs now. Watch it:

In addition to short films, Jack also writes articles and draws comics on his website, Dorkprofilms.

Jonas Haglund – A Blast from the Past

December 28th, 2008 § 8

I’ve known Swedish magician Jonas Haglund for approximately 5 years now, and in addition to being an extremely insightful and entertaining personality, he’s also one of my favorite flourish video artists to watch. Not just because he’s got a devastatingly smooth and off-hand style, but also because his videos are about 130% more creative than most of the ones you see online today. Considering the fact that most of his videos are filmed in his bedroom with nothing more than a static webcam, that’s quite an accomplishment if I do say so myself.

As of late, Jonas has been re-uploading some of his older videos onto his Youtube page. In addition to serving as a generous helping of nostalgia, it’s also a charming reminder of what can be done with a deck of cards, a camera, and the limitless possibilities of one’s imagination.
